Is it good for weight loss to eat a meal after a midnight workout?

Yes, it is still important to eat after a midnight workout. To lose weight, the key factor is total calories in versus total calories out throughout your entire day. Strength training increases your muscle mass which leads to increased metabolism, increased calories burned throughout your day, and decreased body fat. To build that muscle most effectively, 10-20 grams of protein and 50-100 grams of carbohydrates should be consumed within a half hour following your workout. Doing so will repair and build muscle, and replenish muscle glycogen stores. Glycogen is a molecule provided by carbohydrates that gets stored within your muscle cells to be used for energy. Avoid fatty foods directly after your workout since fats slow down the release of sugar (a carbohydrate) into your bloodstream. A liquid meal will digest and get to your muscles quicker than a solid food meal, and may be easier on your stomach before bed, so a protein shake or tall glass of chocolate milk would be good after workout options. Another option could be an egg white and vegetable omelet wrapped in a tortilla with a side of fruit.
